A spectacle of a horrific murder greeted residents of Kyem-Morso, near Anyinam, when a 72-year-old farmer murdered his 60-year-old wife, while the couple's 12 children looked on helplessly. The suspect, Kwasi Kpetigo, was reported to have used an axe to cut the throat of his wife, Yaa Diame, in the room in which members of the family were sleeping. The incident occurred at about 12.30 a.m., last Friday, February 4, 2011. Suspecting his wife of infidelity, Kpetigo was said to have used the axe to inflict several deep cuts at the back of her neck and head in the presence of their children. The grief-stricken children were reported to have run out of the room, screaming loudly to attract the attention of neighbours to the gruesome act. However, attempts by some neighbours to rescue Madam Diame from the grips of Kpetigo proved unsuccessful as Kpetigo was reported to have pulled out a single-barrelled gun and fired at his brother-in-law, Kwame Owusu, 35, and a neighbour, Kwaku Gyasi, who responded to the distress call from the children. He then used a ladder to block the door to the room and continued to inflict more cuts on the wife whose screams were said to have attracted more neighbours to the scene. Briefing the Daily Graphic at Anyinam the Anyinam District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rev. John Opoku, said the Anyinam Police received a report early on Friday, February 4, 2011 that a man had murdered his wife at Akyem-Morso. DSP Rev. Opoku, who led a team of policemen from Anyinam and Kyebi to the scene, said the police were unable to effect the arrest of the suspect, who had used a ladder to block the door from inside the bedroom and threatened to shoot anybody who dared to enter the room. He said since the suspect was hiding in the dark wielding a single-barrelled gun, some of the policemen who attempted to scale the wall to the room were fired at by Kpetigo but the shot narrowly missed one of them. DSP Rev Opoku indicated that under such a dangerous situation, the police fired several warning shots to force the suspect out of the room but when that failed the police had no option but to flush him out with tear gas. When the suspect emerged from the room and saw the police and a huge crowd, he started firing indiscriminately at them but the police returned fire, compelling the suspect to move back into his room.
