Nearly 900 prisoners granted amnesty by President John Mahama to mark this year’s Republic Day celebrations are still languishing in various prisons around the country, more than three weeks after they were pardoned. Joy News sources reveal there is growing agitation among beneficiaries of the 2013 Republic Day pardon due to the delays in releasing them. The beneficiaries include ten seriously ill-prisoners and three others who were said to be 70 years and above. They were recommended by the Regional Medical Board to be released on health grounds. Government in a statement on July 1, directed the Prisons Service to immediately implement the amnesty recommendations. However more than three weeks on, the prisoners still remain in prison custody with no official explanation, at least not yet.
