Members of the National Peace Council (NPC) are expected to visit the conflict stricken Nankpanduri in the Northern region, where there is mounting tension following deadly clashes between the Konkomba and Bimoba ethnic groups there.
At least one person has been killed while many residents have fled the area for fear of their lives. Commercial activities have also grounded to a halt.
Chairman for the NPC, Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante disclosed to Joy News on Wednesday that a team will be dispatched to the Region this week to attempt to intervene and find a solution to the conflict.
Most Reverend Professor Asante said the team, which will be led by the Council’s Executive Secretary Mr Francis Azuimah, will meet and dialogue with opinion leaders in order to foster peace in the area.
The latest development is that Konkomba students at the Nankpanduri Senior High School have abandoned their classrooms, for fear of being attacked by Bimobas in the school.
Headmaster of the school, Harrison Salifu said some of the Konkomba candidates who will be writing the upcoming West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSSCE), which is due in a month’s time, have left campus because they don’t feel safe.
“Majority of the students are from the Bimoba tribe so anytime such clashes occur, those from the minority tribes on campus flee.
“They are not on campus, we have Mamprusis, Kusasis and a few Gonjas but the Konkombas are not on campus now,” Mr. Salifu said.
He said the school is situated near Kpemale, where the initial clash occurred.
