The Justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana are set to do the honourable thing… to give judgement over the NPP’s election petition and to uphold justice by the law. They need our support and patience to do their work.
In the face of that judgement is a threat not only to national security but the social and economic gains made over the years under the leadership of former President Flt.Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, former President John Agyekum Kufuor and former President J.E.A Mills/Mahama administration. Why? Because Nana Akufo-Addo and the leadership of the NPP are preparing not for the Supreme Court’s judgement/ruling but for a power sharing government through their party supporters after the court’s decision (in event of unfavourable judgement/decision).
We cannot deny or ignore this threat to the state of Ghana, its people and future for it is occasioned by a strong determination by the leadership of the NPP through its party’s structures and its organs/groups within it to question and reject the Supreme Court’s ruling---and to embark on sustained simultaneous nationwide violent street protestations in its strongholds with a strong will to make Nana Akufo-Addo a beneficiary of power sharing government.
The power sharing government agenda of Nana Akufo-Addo and the leadership of the NPP is deeply rooted in the mindset of and/or pronouncement made by former President John Agyekum Kufuor that any violence emanating from this disputed election should be blamed solely on the Electoral Commission and Dr.Kwadwo Afari-Djan (Chairman of the Electoral Commission). Why? Because according to the former President the electoral process was flawed and throughout the Electoral Commission has behaved as if it is above the constitution.
This is evidently made manifest by the fact that in spite of their presence in the court Nana Akufo-Addo, the NPP’s leadership through their party’s structures, organs and/or groups are preparing the grounds and the minds of their supporters to violently reject any unfavourable Supreme Court ruling/judgement. From the actions of their elected Members of Parliament, the Alliance for Accountable Government (AFAG), through to the activities of the group ’’ Let My Vote Count ‘’ ---the minds of their strongholds are being made up to believe that the 2012 presidential election results were fraudulent…that Nana Akufo-Addo won and the Supreme Court must overturn the results and declare Nana Akufo-Addo the validly elected President of the Republic of Ghana. OR the demand that Nana Akufo-Addo must be made a Co-President (in a Government of National Unity) and a new election organized and supervised by a newly independent Electoral Commission/Body. This will be a disaster and recipe for long years of political and social disorder and we must not tolerate it.
The leadership of the’’ Alliance for the Empowerment of NDC Constituency Branch Executives’’ is therefore calling on the International Community, the people of Ghana, Civil Society, Religious Organizations, Ghana Bar Association, National Peace Council, Trade Union Congress(TUC) to prevail on Nana Akufo-Addo and the leadership of the NPP to denounce publicly the power sharing government agenda and to assure all that their strongholds will not embark on sustained nationwide violent street protestations and also house-to-house witch-hunt.
This call has become more urgent though publicly Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP’s leadership have reiterated their readiness and/or intent to accept the Supreme Court’s ruling---but collectively they are unable to assure the International Community and the people of Ghana that their supporters throughout the country particularly in their strongholds will accept the court’s ruling and will not engage in violent street protestation and/or rallies as witnessed after the Electoral Commission’s(EC’s) declaration of the 2012 presidential election results. Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP’s leadership must assure the people of Ghana and the International Community before the Justices of the Supreme Court prepares to hear the substantive case and give judgement thereof.
Also, we are calling on the leadership of the security forces in the country to reassure the people of Ghana and the International Community of their readiness to brutally defend the State of Ghana, the People of Ghana and to uphold the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.
The leadership of the ‘’Alliance for the Empowerment of NDC Constituency Branch Executives’’ wish to make it forcefully clear that if Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP’s leadership fail to assure the people of Ghana as well as the International Community--- then neither can the NDC nor its footsoldiers guarantee the International Community and the People of Ghana (who are unconcerned) of anything. We mean it and we are serious---our determination to protect and defend the State of Ghana, its people and the Presidency of John Dramani Mahama is non-negotiable and cannot and would not be compromised. The NPP’s assurance is as good as the NDC’s guarantee…nothing more, nothing less.
In conclusion, if there is any time in the nation’s history that the Justices of the Supreme Court are in need of our protection, support and patience in the discharge of their constitutional duty then, it is now---it is now to protect them from the spirit of traitorous, impunity and arrogance of the Danquah/Busia tradition as we work together to support President, John Dramani Mahama to advance the Better Ghana Agenda.
