Former Director General of the Ghana Health Service and a former Presidential hopeful of the CPP has bemoaned the politics of money, corruption and trickery, describing the general electoral population as corrupt.
He recounted his experiences and the harsh reality when he vied as Presidential candidate of the CPP.
He said he was confronted many times by the delegates some of who said “four years ago we gave you votes, we didn’t get anything. This time around give us something before you begin to talk”.
He made these submissions on Tarzan’s Take on Multi TV and added that even after you have given them (the delegates and electorates) something, “they look at the highest bidder and whatever you have to talk about does not matter. Whether you are espousing issues that will bring comfort to them, they are saying they don’t want it next year, they want it now and that in a sense corrupts the system”.
As far as going round and seeking political office in Ghana, no matter who you are, “if you don’t pay, you don’t get elected,” he added.
Prof Akosa added that the Ghanaian society doesn’t think about the vulnerable groups and development.
He says the situation is a cancer which has spread across all political parties adding, that the country has inherited the worse form of capitalism which is ‘selfishness and individualism’.
He mentioned that over a period, Ghanaians have become cynical about politics because people get into office and amass wealth, which is common knowledge.
“The richest people in this country are politicians or people who have been part of the governance”, he added.
Akosa further noted that in this country, the wealthy people are “not entrepreneurs who have worked and created wealth and employment but people who have never employed one soul in their lives but who have been given appointments by patronage and have made lots of money.”
He said “we have heard stories of Nkrumah moving to Kumasi and the people of Nsawam will go meet him to and hand over money to support his campaign”, a trend that used to happen in this country.
He also accused politicians who talk loosely and make promises on campaign platforms, for the seemingly corrupt electorates, adding that, sadly in this country, the Parliamentarian has virtually become a development officer who receives a bit of common fund, National Health Insurance Levy, GETfund, a practice which is not enshrined in the constitution.
Prof Akosa also took a swipe at civil society groups, describing them as inept and not contributing to Ghana’s politics,
