Smuggling of pre-mix fuel has become a lucrative business for young men along the Aflao border in the Volta Region. The young men who normally ride motorbikes, transport the commodity in yellow gallons through unauthorised routes until cross the border to Togo. Hubert Mawuli Yevu-Agbi of Volta Premier reports that the illegal activity is normally carried out at night. Perpetrators of the criminal activity use the same containers local fishermen use so it is difficult for authorities to make them out. Pre-mix fuel from Ghana has better quality than those found in Togo and is more expensive, Yevu-Agbi reports. The illegal business is particularly lucrative because pre-mix fuel is subsidised by government, hence the smugglers buy it cheap to sell outside. The subsidised pre-mix fuel is government's effort to ease financial burden on fishermen, and to improve upon their living standards. Local fishermen have have denied knowledge of the situation.
