A Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu has described former president Jerry John Rawlings’ critique of the erstwhile Kufuor, Mills administrations as a "publicity stunt".
He claimED since Mr. Rawlings has been in political hibernation for a long time, he wants to capitalize on the popularity of these two ex-presidents to re-launch himself into the country’s body politics.
Ex-president Rawlings has accused the administrations of former presidents John Kufuor and John Atta Mills of retrogressing the many achievements chalked during his regime.
Addressing Cadres to commemorate the 34 the anniversary of the June 4 Uprising Monday, Mr. Rawlings said "setbacks and reversals" in the country have replaced the gains of the revolution.
He maintained that the onus lies on President John Mahama to save Ghana’s economy from total collapse.
But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, John Boadu said recent comments by Jerry Rawlings is a strategy to attract media attention to the June 4 celebrations.
He noted that the tenets of the June 4 revolution which is probity, transparency and accountability are missing in the current democratic dispensation where he says corruption is now the order of the day.
The NPP man indicated that continuous celebration of June 4, given the present circumstances in the country, has lost its relevance.
He observed that for most Ghanaians the June 4 is unfortunate historical milestones in our country’s political calendar hence memories of the coup must be rejected as it ignites a terrifying bloodbath which was climaxed with public executions.
John Boadu noted that the former president has no moral right to accuse his successors of taking Ghana backwards when in fact he [Rawlings] laid a bad foundation during his administration.
"For 19 uninterrupted years as president what can you [Rawlings] write home about? How can you develop an economy when you sold all indigenous companies," he quizzed.
He alleged that under ex-president Rawlings, the economy was so bad that within one year the cedi fell by 50 percent.
John Boadu could not fathom the motive behind Mr. Rawlings’ critique when he performed abysmally in office.
"Was he [Rawlings] expecting Kufuor to perform magic after crippling the economy and selling all state owned companies? he should give us a break".
He scoffed attempt by Jerry Rawlings to regain his popularity in the country adding that the even kingpins who actually staged the revolution have realized the celebration is “419”.
