Minority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, is backing calls for the General Legal Council to investigate the conduct of lawyers involved in the Waterville Holdings Ltd case against the state, which resulted in the payment of judgment debt to the construction firm.The Supreme Court in a unanimous decision last week ruled against Waterville and ordered the firm to refund some €25 million it received from Ghana llegally, through a false judgement debt.The Court also referred the conduct of the defendants’ lawyer to the General Legal Council.According to the court, though the law firm was right to defend their client, they should have considered their ethical obligation in the matter.Mr. Osei Kyei Mensahy-Bonsu is also calling for speedy investigations into the conduct of the lawyers who defended the payment of the judgment debt, although they were aware Waterville did not have a case.Mr. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu also indicated, Ghanaians demand proof of the €25 million the state will retrieve.“We want evidence to be given to us, not as Parliament but as the representative of the people”, he stated.He said the money when retrieved must be deposited into the Consolidated Fund, in consonance with Ghana’s Constitution.
