About 700 nurses at the Korle-Bu teaching hospital who have not been paid since January 2012, are appealing to government to address the situation.
The group of nurses comprising Health Assistants, Clinical, Registered General Nurses and Degree Nurses, were employed by the Health Ministry to work at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital and have not been paid since they were hired.
A tearful nurse recounted their depressing situation.
“Since January 2012…we have not even received a dime. We have to borrow to feed ourselves, borrow to transport ourselves and pay rent…We are not even asking for allowance, all we want is our salaries”.
Another nurse said despite being unpaid, their superiors insist they have to report to work every single day.
The aggrieved nurses, say they have petitioned the authorities of the hospital and the Health Ministry to no avail. Some of them spoke.
Meanwhile, Public Relations officer Mustapha Salifu says the hospital has forwarded a request on behalf of the nurses to the Ministry of Finance and is awaiting response.
