Irate youth in Ashaiman, who have been protesting against the bad nature of roads and lack of street lights in the area, have clashed with a combined team of police and military personnel.
Earlier, the rioting youth took over the tollbooths on the motorway and looted money and other properties.
The angry youth, who are said to be more than 100, were also demanding monies from people stuck in traffic on the motorway.
Joy News reporters on the ground say the security forces have been able contain the riots after firing tear gas to disperse them.
The youth also fought back by throwing stones and other objects at the security agencies, and one police officer has been severely injured.
Earlier Monday morning, the youth blocked major roads in the Ashaiman area and burnt tyres in protest of poor roads and a lack of street lights. Thick black smoke engulfed parts of the municipality where the youth had mounted the road blocks.
Police have arrested five persons in connection with the demonstrations which have subsided.
