A man and his few months old baby have been shot dead in the latest violence at Alavanyo in the Volta region. Officials say the attack is linked to the long standing land dispute between the people of Nkonya and Alavanyo. Two other people also sustained gunshot wounds in the violence.Volta Regional Minister Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, who confirmed the incident to Joy News a while ago aaid security has been tightened in the Alavanyo township.Earlier the people of Alavanyo were engaged in a brief 'misunderstanding' with security forces, but the Minister said his outfit moved in to resolve the issue. In April, President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV in the longstanding land dispute and warned chiefs in Alavanyo and Nkonya, they would be held responsible if fresh violence breaks out in those areas.Togbe Afede’s warning followed renewed conflict in which one person was shot dead in March, 2013, at Nkonya Tayi. He gave the warning on Thursday, April 18, 2013, during the first emergency meeting over the renewed clashes. But Nii Afotey Agbo said it would be difficult to pick up any chief either from Alavanyo or Nkonya because people could take advantage the directive to serve their own interest. He, however, told Joy News security forces are doing everything to restore permanent peace to the area.Conflict resolution expert, Emmanuel Bombande, has blamed the latest case of violence on the lack of commitment on the part of regional authorities to restore lasting peace.According to him the only solution to the recurrent conflict would be for the two communities to sit down and dialogue.
