Accra Mayor, Alfred Vanderpuye says cases of cholera in the national capital have reduced as a result of the Assembly’s interventions.
The mayor says only 12 cases of cholera have so far been recorded this mid-year. Around this time last year 473 cases were reported.
At a news conference in Accra earlier today, Mr. Vanderpuye also disclosed about 3,528 home owners who had no toilets in their homes have been prosecuted.
"During the mid-year because we are aware of the rains and its attendant issues and sometimes negative factors, it has always been necessary for us to undertake certain measures.
"We introduced the polluter-pay-systems by way of ensuring effective collection of refuse; the prosecution of home owners without toilets in their premise.
“…We have also reduced open defecation as a result of the provision of toilet facilities in premises.
“As a result of the prosecutions, 13,259 new toilets have been constructed by the public in their homes,” he chronicled.
