The Paramount Chief of Alavanyo in the Volta region, Togbega Tsedze Atakora has invited leaders of Nkonya to return to the negotiating table for peace talks.According to Togbega Atakora, dialogue and negotiations are the only means to broker peace among the two towns. His call follows the shooting of two people -a man and his six-month old baby- in yet another case of a land dispute between residents of the two towns. There were reports of people fleeing the Alavanyo town because residents of Nkonya allegedly attacked them and injuring two others in the process. The chief however said reports of people fleeing the town are untrue. The latest development has compelled the Regional Security Council to tighten security in the two towns.Regional Minister Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo told Joy FM “the situation is getting out of hands” and hints of plans to invite the leaders of the two communities to Accra to dialogue.“If they refuse to listen or give respect to authorities then we will be forced to take another action,” Nii Afotey stated. But speaking Wednesday on the Midday News on Joy FM, the Paramount Chief noted: “when we started this in about 2004, there was peace; we were visiting each other from 2004 up to about 2009 when they [Nkonya chiefs] left the negotiation.”So we are saying let’s go back and talk…it’s better than this shooting and killing; it does not solve the problem,” Togbega Atakora stated.
