Members of the Ghana Medical Association who threatened to embark on a strike action over demands for improved working conditions say the threat no longer holds.
The new development is the result of agreements reached at a marathon meeting with their employers.
The meeting, which started on Monday, closed on Tuesday with what Dr. Emmanuel Adom Winful, President of the GMA, described as a very good step towards resolving a myriad of issues confronting the group.
In the immediate though, government has restored fuel allowance which is to be implemented with immediate effect while arrears would be paid at a yet to be arranged, mutually acceptable period.
Immediate and concrete steps are to be taken at the level of the Fair Wages Commission towards addressing distortions in relativities after the Ministry of Health acknowledged the serious distortions.
House Officers, some of who had worked for six months without pay, will have their salaries data promptly keyed into the Accountant General’s database for payment to affected House Officers to be effected in December 2007.
Again the meeting also scheduled subsequent meetings to culminate in the signing of a memorandum of understanding in December 2007.
Dr. Winful told Joy News that issues like Conditions of Service, Salary distortions and others which are long-term issues and demand time to be resolved, are all being tackled and said the Association was happy and quite satisfied that they got a good deal from the negotiations.
