Chiefs of the feuding Alavanyo and Nkonya communities in the Volta region have been summoned to an emergency meeting following renewed clashes there.
The Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, says the purpose of the Accra meeting is to find a lasting solution to the age-old conflict.
Togbe Afede XIV, who is also the President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, told JOY News Thursday, the meeting has become necessary because “the Volta Region needs peace to progress”.
There were reports of renewed clashes between members of the two communities Wednesday but no casualties have been reported.
Earlier this week, a man and his four-month-old baby were gunned down at Alavanyo while two others sustained serious gun wounds when they were attacked by unknown assailants suspected to belong to the Nkonya faction.
Although the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) said it has intensified security presence in the two towns, the Paramount Chief of Alavanyo, Togbega Atakora says there is not a single security officer in his area offering protection to his people.
The Chief said people have now resorted to arming themselves for self defense in the wake of the attacks.
But Togbe Afede said he is “not happy about the development” there and urged the security officers deployed to the area to act as “honest enforcers of peace to make sure no one crosses the boundary" to attack the other.
Hohoe-based Lorlonyo FM’s Isaac Kwesi Mintah reported from Alavanyo-Wudidi, the biggest of the seven towns in the Alavanyo area that, “everything has virtually come to a standstill with many of the people feeling insecure”.
