The Moderator of the Presby Church of Ghana, Rev. Professor Emmanuel Martey, has asked judges, especially those sitting on the Presidential Election Petition not to be discouraged in their quest to bring sanity in Ghana’s media landscape. His admonition comes in the wake of some criticisms against the panel sitting on the ongoing Presidential Election Petition for allegedly invoking fear in citizens and criminalizing free speech. The Panel led by William Atuguba summoned the NPP’s Deputy Communications Director, Sammy Awuku, reprimanded and later banned him from attending the court hearing for making contemptuous comments on the case. They have again summoned three others; Stephen Atubiga, Kwaku Boahen, both of the NDC and Ken Kuranchie, Managing Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper for questioning over alleged contemptuous comments. The summons have attracted some level of criticisms with Professor S. Kwaku Asare petitioning the Chief Justice to, among other things, stop the panel from arbitrarily inviting and intimidating people over their comments. The NPP’s Arthur Kennedy has also written an open letter criticizing the seeming open ended invitations to people by the panel. He fears the attitude by the Supreme Court could be misapplied in the future. But addressing members of the Ghana Bar Association to mark the 31st commemoration of the death of the three High Court judges during the PNDC era, Rev. Professor Emmanuel Martey said the judges must not be deterred. “Any mentally deranged fellow could go on any radio to say whatever he or she likes about you; to settle personal scores and the law is impotent when it comes to inviting such people and dealing with them according to the rule of law. “That is why the genesis of what is happening [at the Supreme Court is worrying]. Please don’t be discouraged, go on. We support you,” he said. Rev Martey chided the media for unjustifiably maligning and tarnishing the reputation citizens. “Instead of using ICT as a critical tool to develop and protect the interest of our nation and civil society, it is rather being used to scandalize, to tarnish the reputation of leaders. “Even her ladyship the Chief Justice has not been spared. I don’t know if the President of the Ghana Bar Association hasn’t gotten his yet,” he remarked. He said he will continue to say the truth as it is, despite the many criticisms against him.
