The Member of Parliament for Berekum East, Dr Kwabena Twum Nuamah has expressed disquiet at the shortage of medical personnel at the Berekum Holy Family Hospital and called for strategic reforms to address the canker.
Dr Kwabena Twum Nuamah has therefore, called for government to take immediate steps to address the problem, since it is having a serious toll on the few medical personnel stationed there.
The Member Parliament noted that the situation becomes more pronounced in view of the Holy Family Hospital remaining the only district hospital which takes referrals from adjoining towns like nsawkaw, Tain, Jaman South and East.
He bemoaned the doctor to patients ratio noting that, the only three doctors there currently, are compelled to take care of over thousands of prospective patients, and this is putting much pressure on the medical personnel at the hospital.
Dr Kwabena Twum Nuamah made the comments when he presented medical equipment to the hospital. The equipment which is worth over fifty GH¢50,000 includes some covered mattresses, JV Stand, Digital Blood pressure monitoring devices, Philips Heart start, Blood Glucose system among many others.
The medical equipment was in response to an appeal he made to citizens from Berekum who are domiciled in the United Kingdom.
The Member of Parliament, who expressed his appreciation to the Berekum Association in the UK, promised to work with government to ensure that more doctors are brought to the hospital to reduce high waiting time patients have to go through, as a result of inadequate doctors.
A former Chairman of the Berekum Association, John Damoah commended the staff of the hospital for working tirelessly to save lives of the people despite the challenge they are faced with.
