The St. George Anglican Garrison Church building at Burma Camp was totally destroyed after it was gutted by fire on Thursday July 11.Reports indicate everything in the church was completely burnt, leaving just the frames of the structure standing.The fire was said to have started at dawn on Thursday and the Military has commenced investigations into the cause of the fire.Joy News’ Abena Oppong who was at the scene said the warden on duty told her at about 1:30 am, he heard a bang coming from the inside the building.The warden said when he rushed to the building he saw that the altar of the church was on fire, and he quickly raised an alarm.An eye-witness confirmed the warden’s story. According to him, because the fire started from inside the building, the magnitude of its force could not be ascertained.Abena Oppong said people who responded to the alarm fought the fire for several hours with fire extinguishers without success.WO1 Stanley Sokpa, who is a personnel of the Armed Forces Fire Service, said he suspected electrical fault, but investigations have commenced into the actual cause of the fire.
