The Police Administration has directed the transfer of all officers of the Motor Traffic Transport Unit (MTTU) at Sunyani in the Bono Ahafo Region, over their alleged involvement in corrupt practices.
The officers were alleged to have extorted monies from commuters particularly, those who ply the Techiman-Buipe road.
Director-General of the MTTU of the Police Service, ACP Angwubutoge Awuni announced this in Wa, the Upper West Regional capital, while addressing officers there.
“I have just announced the transfer of every MTTU officer in Sunyani, from the Commander to the last Constable; I've transferred all of them and asked them that they should wait for a vehicle.
Because the allegations of corruption as far as members of the Police Service are concerned, especially within the Kintampo-Tachiman-Buipe stretch has been a matter of concern and the IGP [Inspector General of Police] is not happy at all.”
He warned the officers in Wa to “reform their mode of operation” in the discharge of their duties else; “we will not hesitate to do the same to you”.
Clarifying further on Newsnight, ACP Awuni said the transfer “takes immediate effect” and the affected officers will be “taken out of the MTTU” and sent to other departments of the Police Service for observation.
He said investigations will be commissioned into the allegations and the officers found culpable will be prosecuted.
According to him, the decision is part a holistic approach being adopted by the Administration to rid the Service of corrupt officers, adding that, what has happened in Sunyani will be replicated across the country.
