Flagbearers of political parties in the 2012 general elections have admonished on Nana Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party flagbearer and first Petitioner in the Presidential Election Petition to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court. In a closed-door meeting held at the residence of Nana Akufo-Addo, Wednesday, the flagbearers implored the NPP leader to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court to ensure lasting peace in the country. After almost eight months of ruthless election petition litigation, in which leading members of the NPP are seeking to overturn the results of the 2012 election declared by the Electoral Commission in favour of the incumbent, President John Mahama, the nine panel of judges have given August 29 date as judgement day. There are fears of possible violence in the aftermath of the verdict and that has culminated in a crusade for peace by civil society groups, religious bodies and even political parties. On Wednesday it was the turn of the presidential hopefuls in the 2012 elections to join the campaign for peace and to admonish parties involved in the Petition to accept the verdict. Joy News' Joseph Gakpo who was at Nana Akufo-Addo's residence reported that with the exception of the PPP flagbearer, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom and President John Mahama who led the governing NDC, the PNC flagbearer Hassan Ayariga, Dr Henry Lartey of the GCPP, Dr Abu Sakara of the CPP, Akwasi Addae of the UFP and Jacob Osei Yeboah, an independent candidate converged at the residence of the NPP flagbearer for the peace discussion. Even though the meeting was held behind closed doors, snippets of information picked up by Gakpo indicated that the NPP flagbearer gave his firm commitment to accept the verdict. The flagbearers are scheduled to pay a similar visit to the president, John Mahama, also to implore him to accept the verdict regardless of how it goes.
