Members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Muslim communities in Kumasi have embarked on a peace walk to show their commitment to peace ahead of the Supreme Court judgment on the election petition.Clad in party colours, members of both NDC and NPP held hands and sang peace songs as they walked through some principal streets of the Ashanti Regional capital.According to Luv FM’s Prince Appiah, leaders of the Muslim community delivered peace messages at place considered flashpoints in the Kumasi metropolis.Executive Secretary of the Council of Imams, Seidu Ustaz Ahmed, said the peace walk was an ample declaration of their commitment to peace after the court ruling."This peace walk is an ample declaration to the entire country and the world at large that our commitment to peace is unquestionable. It is also to send a signal to any person or group of persons who may decide to disturb the peace we currently enjoy that it won’t be countenanced,” he stated.Seidu Ustaz Ahmed added that they won’t hesitate to handover to the police anybody who may foment trouble in the community.On her part, Ashanti Regional President of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Ghana (FOMWAG), Hajia Fatimatu Yasmeen Appiedu, emphasized the need for women to be at the forefront of the calls for peace.She indicted that women and children, considered venerable, are the most affected when there is violence.Women must, therefore, actively dissuade their husbands from engaging in any acts of violence ahead of the court ruling, she said.Hajia Yasmeen urged women to use their powerful influence as mothers and wives to safeguard the prevailing peace in Ghana.
