It was a massive display of tolerance, regard and respect for the office of The President yesterday, when all 16 delegates of the NPP pledged their full support for and decided to settle on their very own President-in-waiting Nana Akuffo Addo.
According to the party’s constitution, the results clearly indicated a need for a second run-off, but for the preservation of the party’s unity and limited resources.
In a speech made by Nana Akuffo Addo after his successful victory in the NPP presidential battle, he sounded a warning that the party was prepared to go all out with their ultimate foe, NDC flagbearer Prof. Fiifi Evans Atta-Mills whiles conceding the fact that he had incredibly an upper hand over the NPP and other parties since his campaign for the presidential slot had begun a long time ago.
He however attributed his victory as flagbearer to the representation of three of his relatives in the then Big Six, namely: J.B Danquah (his granduncle), William Ofori Atta (his uncle) and finally Edward Akuffo Addo (his father), in activities marking the golden jubilee of Ghana’s Independence.
He again said that his party would work hand in hand with all parties, particularly very strong and influential people such as Prof. John Atta-Mills of the NDC, Dr. Kwesi Nduom (CPP) and Dr. Kwesi Botchwey of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP). He thus reiterated for a dialogue on issues for effective solution to problems that plague the country and its inhabitants rather than a resort to politics of false accusations, vilification and vindictiveness amongst parties.
He finally commended and thanked Alan Kyerematen, the first runner-up, for exhibiting good sportsmanship by throwing in the towel to avoid a hectic run-off and waste of resources, consoling him that he had the qualities to enable him to become the country’s president one day.
