The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo has denied ever making promises to chieftaincy factions in Bawku in the Upper East Region, which has resulted in the recent violence.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Matilda Asante on News File, Joy FM’s current affairs programme on Saturday January 5, 2008, Akufo-Addo said allegations that have been made against him, accusing him of promising to restore the Bawku skin to a faction when he becomes president is untrue.
The NPP flag bearer said he has deliberately avoided visiting palaces during his campaign for the party’s leadership because he thought as a politician, it was not within his remit to do so. He also cited that long process involved in visiting traditional chiefs as one of the reasons why he did not do so.
He accused his detractors of making the false allegations against him.
Factional fighting between Mamprusis and Kusasis flared up in Bawku recently, leaving several people dead and others wounded with resultant loss of property. Several other residents have also been displaced.
