Residents of Agorve in the Ketu North District of the Volta Region are kicking against plans by government to impose rice production on them.
The residents claim they do not have the necessary funding to venture into rice cultivation.
According to them they are comfortable with the sugarcane farming which they believe is more profitable than rice production.
The insist the sugarcane farming is their only source livelihood.
The farmers claim they saw a couple of whites surveying their lands and after probing, they were informed the lands would be used to cultivate rice.
They say any attempt to take the lands away for rice cultivation will be resisted, adding they have to be consulted on any decision government intends to take.
Emmanuel Laryea Ketu North Director of Agric said there is ready market for rice than sugarcane and hoped the residents will begin to appreciate the need to diversify.
DCE for Ketu North Mr Kofi Lawson also assured the residents that their lands will not be taken away from them.
