Kwame Ayew alias “Red” one of the suspected killers of Mr Samuel Best Ennin, who has been remanded awaiting trial, faces another trial at a Kumasi Circuit Court in connection with illegal possession of firearms.
Ayew pleaded not guilty to the offence and would appear in court again next month.
Eric Owusu Ansah, Joseph Ayim and Iddrisu Baba; mechanic, sprayer and a driver’s mate respectively are his accomplices.
They all pleaded not guilty to the charges ranging from unlawful entry, stealing, dishonestly receiving and possession of firearms without authority, but a plea of guilty was entered for Owusu Ansah whose explanation in addition to his plea gave him out and he is due for sentence on the next adjourned date.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the court presided over by Mr Richard Kogyapwah that one Mr Kofi Nti, a trader and the complainant live at Krofrom, a suburb of Kumasi with the accused persons as neighbours.
She said in 2005 the complainant locked his room and left for the market as usual, on his return he found out that his room had been broken into with items such as a Mossberg Pump Action Gun valued at GH¢700, a DVD player costing GH¢1400 and a cash of GH¢400 missing.
A formal report was made to the Police in Kumasi, who started investigations. Through the complainant’s own investigations, Owusu Ansah was arrested leading to the arrest of Ayim, all of whom confessed entering the room and making away with the items mentioned and added that they shared the money equally and sold the DVD to one “Frenchman” at GH¢30.
Ayim furthermore said he gave the gun to Iddrisu, but Iddrisu denied in his caution statement.
During police investigation Ayew was found with the gun in his hide out at Sandema in the Upper East on February 24, 2007, after robbing one Mr Poku Asem Kwadwo at Buokrom on November 4, 2006.
Ayew admitted the offence in his caution statement, but could not assist the police to retrieve it from one Danso to whom he claimed selling the weapon for GH¢600.
After a thorough investigation they were charged and arraigned.
