Nana Yaa Daani II, the queen mother of the New Juaben Traditional Area in the Eastern Region, was yesterday convicted of assault charges preferred against her by the police.
The queen mother was arraigned before a Koforidua circuit court presided over by Ebenezer Osei Darko, after investigations proved that she was liable.
According to the prosecution, on August 10,2013, the complainant in the case, Baffour Topen Sriboe Boateng, aka Nana Topen, was dancing at the funeral of Opanin Boateng, (the father of former MP for New Juaben South, B.B. Boateng) at about 4:30 pm and stepped on a royal carpet laid before the accused.
In the process, the accused person allegedly pulled Mr. Sriboe Boateng's umbrella under which he was dancing, causing one of the metals to break and subsequently scratched the skin under the right eye of the complainant.
The accused, in her caution statement, admitted the offence and said the complainant was not a chief but posed and danced like one, the reason for which she had sought to prevent him from stepping on the royal carpet laid before her at the funeral grounds.
In his ruling, Ebenezer Osei Darko quoted some authorities to buttress his point that the queen mother had assaulted Nana Topen.
He noted that the evidence before him, including that of the accused person's own admission of the offence, showed that she had assaulted the complainant. .
He therefore found her guilty but did not award any custodian sentence.
He cautioned and discharged her and advised that she and Nana Topen should keep peace.
Nana Yaa Daani, whose eyes were glistening with tear, thanked the court before walking away.
