I have over the past three weeks read and listened to various mass communication media on the above. I am personally saddened and disappointed with the renomination of Dr Richard Anane as a Minister of Transport by President Kufuor. I will not wish to go into the moral and legal issues raging around the issue but wish to take a common man's position on the matter. Clearly, it is an immutable fact that funds amounting to or about USD110,000 was sent to the United States of America by Dr Anane and persons close to him over a period of time. The quantum of funds in my view was and is still very colossal within the context of our country and begs a lot of questions. The motivation by those who contributed to this transfer I find intriguing and wish further investigation were conducted . I expected the Internal Revenue Service(IRS) and Revenue Agencies Governing Board(RAGB) to have investigated the tax position of all those good samaritans to ascertain whether the filing of their tax returns for those years covered those indicated transactions either on their own volition or instigation by the office of the president . Corruption in my view is a very difficult matter to prove and one needs to look closely at circumstantial and behavioural patterns. I find the pattern disturbing and if the Presidency wants us to believe there is no evidence , the evidence in my view is staring in their face. What is the motivation for persons to make substantial monetary contributions to the personal matter of a minister. I hope those persons have been consistent over the years by assisting Dr Anane in other personal matters prior to his appointment as a cabinet minister. In the main, the nomination of the Dr Richard Anane is a setback in the fight to root out corruption which afflicts our nation notwithstanding the prerogative of the presidency to nominate. Prerogative and discretion should be exercised in a way to inure to the benefit of Ghanaians who ultimately decide on who should steer the affairs of the country. Authored by Kwesi Korboe P.O.
