Japan have become the first team from Group C at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to advance to the competition’s quarter-final stage after putting together a stunning 10-0 performance against Paraguay.
Paraguay managed to get the first look at goal in the second minute but Jessica Martinez’s shot went wide. From there, Japan, took control of the match and refused to loosen their grip. The east Asian side demonstrated excellent control maintaining possession with apparent ease leaving Paraguay scrambling as Japan launched wave after wave of attack.
Seven Japanese players found their way onto the scoresheet, captain Hina Sugita leading the way with a second-half hat-trick. Japan had a three goal lead at half-time, and two minutes after the break the scoring continued when Nana Ichise pounced on a loose ball in the box to make it 4-0.
Japan’s precise passing led to several breakaway attempts and several were finished with composure typically found in much older footballers. Nevertheless, Heidi Salas performed admirably in goal forParaguay making a plethora of saves despite the final scoreline.
Japan face New Zealand in San Jose on Sunday to wrap up Group C, but Asako Takakura's side will undoubtedly begin their preparations for the quarter-finals. Paraguay will take on Spain at the same time in search of a win hoping to find a way into the tournament’s knockout stage.
