One of the oldest airlines operating in the country, British Airways, says it will be out-dooring its largest airplane this month to give passengers extreme comfort.
The Boeing 747, reputed as the largest regular route passenger plane to operate in Ghana, will be outdoored on March 30, 2014.
Managers of BA have also added to their route capacity by adding a new morning flight from Ghana to UK.
As part of activities marking the arrival of the Boeing 747, BA is giving away a Business Class ticket to one lucky listener of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.
“Now flying 10 times a week, with both morning and evening departures, British Airways is offering you more seats and even better connections to London and over 150 worldwide destinations,” the airline said in a statement.
It says “we are giving you the chance to win free tickets on board British Airways’ Club World Business Class cabin and to experience the world class facilities at Heathrow’s Terminal 5.”
Terminal 5 is Heathrow Airport’s newest terminal. Used exclusively by British Airways and Iberia, Terminal 5 is a state of the art building - the largest free-standing building in the UK. The glass and steel structure gives a feeling of space and significantly increases the building’s energy efficiency.
The design of the new terminal began in 1989, but government planning permission was only granted in November 2001. The terminal was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on the 14th March 2008 and was open to passengers on the 27th March 2008.
British Airways has been operating in Ghana since 13 October 1937 (77 years in 2014) and boasts 10 flights out of the country every week.
Managers say British Airways has consistently set the pace in the aviation industry in Ghana and the introduction of the largest commercial passenger aircraft in the country is consistent with their desire to give passengers a royal treat.
“British Airways launched the first Business Class seat that reclines into a fully flat six foot bed in 2000…was also the first global commercial carrier to introduce a fourth class of travel (Premium Economy) also in 2000,” the company noted.
It emphasised that “We continue to use the latest technology to provide services to customers; including providing iPads for cabin crew and pilots, mobile boarding passes via smart phones and an app that enables you to book from a smartphone.”
The airline says it is investing more than £5bn globally in new aircraft, smarter aircraft cabins, elegant lounges, and new technologies to make life more comfortable in the air and on the ground.
On its corporate social responsibility, the company said, “British Airways’ global partnership with UK charity, Comic Relief, is supporting a charity project in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region. A video of this project, will be shown on all BA flights around the world to serve as a source of raising funds to support such projects.”
