The mangement of Newmont Ghana has confirmed the death of one of its workers, in an accident at its Akyem Mine in the Eastern Region on Wednesday, March 26.
The company has also commissioned investigations into the cause of the accident. The identity of the deceased staff is however, yet to be made known.
Dave Schummer, Regional Senior Vice President, Africa Operations said: “On behalf of all Newmont, we extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family, and share in their grief at this extremely difficult time".
“Our priorities are to support the deceased’s family, friends and co-workers during this time of unimaginable loss, while also investigating the causes of this tragic accident."
Newmont Ghana has since notified the family and relevant authorities and says its paramount priority remains the safety of its employees, contractors and communities.
The scene of the accident has been secured and related operations halted.
The company says it is closely working with the Mine Inspectorate Division and the District Police Service to thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident and put in place remedial measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
