Women in Gari Processing Industry at Korkormu in the Akwapim North District of the Eastern Region have appealed to the District Assembly and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to provide the area with potable water and electricity to boost the production of Gari in the area.
According to them, water is an essential commodity that is needed in the production process therefore the lack of it affects the cost of production significantly.
The leader of Milenorvisi Group, a Gari Processing group at Korkormu Ms Saratha Angli revealed this in an interview with Myjoyonline.com at Korkormu in the Eastern Region.
She said the Milenorvisi Gari Processing factory was established by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, IFA and, Root and Tuber Improvement and Marketing Programme two years ago.
According to her, the project has created employment for a total number of 45 people who are mostly women in the catchment area.
Ms Saratha Angli noted, the facility has significantly improved on their standard of living hence the need for the Ministry to replicate the programme in most parts of the country to generate employment as well as empower the people, especially women.
She however mentioned non-availability of electricity and potable water for production as a major challenge facing the industry. This, she revealed has increased the cost of production.
She appealed to the District Assembly to assist the Milenovisi Gari Village with water and electricity in order to boost the Gari processing business.
Ms Saratha Angli also revealed, the Gari Industry is so viable and when managed properly, most youths, especially women, can be self sufficient as well as improve on their socio-economic development.
