Lufthansa outdoors new airline to serve Ghanaian market

German Airline Lufthansa, has upgraded its services between Accra and Frankfurt with an Airbus A330-300.

The new wide body aircraft offers a three-class configuration with 8 seats in First Class, 48 in Business Class and 191 in Economy Class.

Announcing this in Accra on Monday, Lufthansa’s General Manager Ghana, Kevin Markette said the introduction of the Airbus A330-300 shows their strong commitment to Ghana which he said is one of the most promising markets in Africa and has been part of the Lufthansa network for nearly 50 years.

“It brings a doubling of capacity per flight because it comes with a capacity increase of more than 100%. It also brings our first class which is a 5 star rating by Skytrax.”

“One additional benefit that we bring into the market is a very much bigger cargo capacity on our aircraft. This would definitely aid in the bilateral trade between Germany, the rest of Europe and Ghana. We have per flight up to 15-16 tons of cargo capacity, which would definitely help our Ghanaian customers in terms of fruit exports,” he added.

In addition to the Airbus A330-300, Lufthansa is also offering Ghanaian dishes in all classes on flights from Accra.

“We have listened to the requests from our customers in Ghana so in order to cater to these wishes, we would be offering Ghanaians dishes like grilled chicken, jollof rice and kelewele,” Kevin Markette revealed.

“For passengers' extra convenience, Lufthansa is the first flight from Europe to land in the evening and also the first evening flight leaving to Europe, thereby significantly reducing waiting times on arrival and departure in Accra”, he added.

Carsten Schaeffer, Lufthansa Vice President Sales and Services Southeast Europe, Middle East and Africa, noted that the future population of Africa supersedes any growth rate in the other four continents.

He said Lufthansa believes in Ghana because it is one of the key future developing markets in Africa.

“Lufthansa has been working hard to re-introduce the large Airbus to its Ghana route. We can now offer our passengers the full range of an exceptional Lufthansa experience right from Accra and back.”

Lufthansa commenced flight operations to Accra on August 24, 1967, with two flights a week, using Boeing 707 aircraft. The Ghanaian capital then also served as a stopover for Lufthansa‘s flights to Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1975, the German airline increased its offer to three weekly services and later upgraded to four and then five weekly flights.

The Airbus A330-300 comes with increased capacity, space and brings the renowned 5 Star First Class to Ghana replacing the two-class Boeing Business Jet. In Frankfurt passengers find easy connections to the airline’s choice of flights to 235 destinations in 78 countries.
