Philip Sowah is due to quit Airtel Ghana as the Chief Executive Officer by the end of May 2014, after six years of dedicated service to the company. He would be succeeded by the Director for Vodafone Business Solutions, Lucy Quist.
Philip Sowah is one of Ghana’s most respected CEOs and has been with Airtel right from the company’s birth in Ghana as Zain in December 2008. Prior to joining Airtel, he was the Chief Officer of One Touch, the Mobile Division of the hitherto Ghana Telecom (now Vodafone).
He has been extremely influential in building Airtel Ghana from scratch to become one of Ghana’s fastest growing network and one of the most successful and loved brands in Ghana today.
Over the last six years, Philip’s strong focus on revenue generation has taken the business to great heights; from its historic first customer in 2008 to over 3.5million customers in 2014.
Under his leadership, he championed an aggressive network rollout which made Airtel the first to launch a 3G network in Ghana - making Airtel the superior data network in Ghana.
His drive and commitment to excellence also delivered the highest non-voice (data and value added services) revenue contribution across Airtel Africa, for which he received an award in 2013. Airtel’s successes during his tenure have also been recognised and acknowledged with multiple awards from credible institutions including: Telecoms Company of The Year, CEO of The Year, Best Mobile Money Service and Best Customer Care.
Philip Sowah is one of the founding members of the Ghana Telecom Chamber of which he is currently the Chairman of the board of trustees.
It is unclear where he is heading now but JOY BUSINESS gathers he would be consulting in various industries.
Airtel Group has also engaged him to play a governance role in establishing the Airtel Foundation in the country - following his successes with major CSR initiatives like Touching Lives and the reconstruction of a dilapidated school in Odumase Krobo, both have won multiple awards in Ghana.
