Mr. Sulemanu Koney has been appointed as the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines with immediate effect.
The appointment was made by the Executive Committee of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and its President Mr Daniel Owiredu.
Mr. Koney replaces Dr. Toni Aubynn who has been appointed CEO of the Minerals Commission, after two and half years at the Chamber.
Mr. Koney assumes the mantle with tremendous knowledge and experience in the mining industry, having worked as the Director for Research, Analysis and Finance of the Chamber for the past thirteen years.
According to Mr. Dan Owiredu, President of the Chamber, “the industry is in challenging times and it is important to appoint someone with the right temperament, skill and experience in the workings of the mining industry to lead the Chamber.”
Mr. Sulemanu Koney brings on board over twenty years working experience which has been in technical positions in the extractive industry.
Prior to his appointment as the acting CEO of the Chamber, Mr. Koney was the Director of Analysis, Research and Finance of the Ghana Chamber of Mines for over thirteen years.
“Mr. Koney is one of our own and we have no doubt that he will deliver beyond expectation. He has been very instrumental in the success story of the Chamber so far and this new office gives him a higher mandate and a broader spectrum to bring his expertise to bear and continue with his illustrious service,” says Dan Owiredu.
Before joining the Chamber in 2000, he worked with Shell Ghana now Vivo Energy Ghana Limited. He began his career at Shell Energy in the marketing department and was in charge of technical sales with focus on Lubricants. At the same time, he provided technical support to the field’s sales team for various sectors including mining.
He was part of the team set up by Shell to increase the company’s influence and inroads into the mining industry.
Mr. Koney was later appointed the Retail Business Manager for the West African Sub-region, a position he declined to take up new challenges in the Chamber.
He has worked for the Chamber for thirteen years in various capacities. He has served actively on a number of committees which include: Technical, Security, Finance and Building Committees of the Chamber.
Commenting on the appointment, the immediate past CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr. Toni Aubynn said “I exit the Chamber comfortably knowing that it is in safe and able hands.”
Mr. Koney is a product of Accra Academy and a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with a BSC Honours in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in International Business from the School of Management, Maastricht, the Netherlands.
He also holds a post-graduate diploma in marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK, and is a member of the Institute of Directors (IOD), Ghana.
He currently serves on the board of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and is the Chair of its Technical Committee. He is a member of the team which has led the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector in Ghana.
He is a member of the Steering Committee of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) and was part of the team which facilitated Ghana’s signing on to the EITI and attaining compliant status in 2010.
The news of Mr. Sulemanu Koney’s appointment has been received with great enthusiasm by industry players and stakeholders of the mining industry.
