A policeman who, together with two other people, allegedly robbed a taxi driver at gunpoint in Accra has been arrested.
A wallet believed to have fallen from the pocket of the policeman, identified as General Lance Corporal Daniel Mensah, exposed him.
His accomplices, whose identities are yet to be established, are on the run.
According to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner Of Police Mr Prosper Agblor, Gen L/Cpl Mensah had been on seven days’ excuse duty since May 16, 2014 but had always dressed in police uniform under the pretext of going to work.
At a press briefing in Accra yesterday, COP Agblor said about 3:15 a.m. on May 23, 2014, three men hired a KIA Spectra taxi, with registration number GX 5715-13 and driven by George Boahene, from Laterbiokoshie to the Industrial Area.
Gunpoint
When they got to Awudome, the passengers directed the course of the car towards a dead-end route behind TV Africa and at gunpoint caused the driver to stop and ordered him to alight from the car.
They searched him and the car, got GH¢2,170 and fled.
While fleeing, a wallet fell from the pocket of one of the suspects who had searched the driver.
Exposure
“The content of the wallet exposed No. 39670 G/L/Cpl Daniel Mensah as one of the suspects. The items in the wallet included the appointment card of the police officer, his Pro Credit ATM card and a Standard Chartered Bank visa card,” COP Agblor said.
He said following a complaint by the taxi driver and the description of the robber from whose pocket the wallet had fallen, Gen L/Cpl was traced to his station yesterday and arrested.
Investigations, he said, were ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the group, adding that on conclusion of the investigations, they would be arraigned.
Caution
Meanwhile, COP Prosper Agblor warned that the Police Administration would not shield criminal elements within the Police Service.
“We will identify them and smoke them out,” he maintained.
