The National Democratic Congress (NDC), is calling for the legalization of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to ensure that its suggestions to the Electoral Commission (EC) are not treated with contempt.
The National Organizer of the party, who put up the proposal, said most of the times, brilliant ideas given by the political parties to the EC are thrown away; because nothing binds the EC to implement those suggestions.
Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said it is time the EC take IPAC serious as a stakeholder in nurturing Ghana’s democracy and propagating the rule of law, but the EC, he said, could as well scrap IPAC off if the EC finds it redundant.
“If they think IPAC is not necessary, they should forget it,” he said.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo was reacting on Citi FM to a report that the Electoral Commission has apologized for problems encountered during the just ended registration exercise.
Even though he acknowledged the EC’s regret, he chided the Commission for failing to communicate effectively with the political parties, when some reported irregularities started to mar the exercise.
On the same platform, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Ohene-Ntow, accepted the EC’s apology, but said its failure to listen to IPAC advise will give the political parties “extra work” in the exhibition exercise.
The registration exercise, which started on July 31 and ended on August 12, was inundated by huge operational challenges including shortage of registration forms and other logistics, slow process, confusion, registration of minors, double registration and violence.
