A new module under the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) will soon be introduced when the programme returns in full swing.

Dubbed the Youth in maritime labour, trained youth would be offered an opportunity to benefit from enormous employment opportunities on ships outside the country.

This was contained in a press release issued on Wednesday.

The release, among other things, stated that the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) programme has now been moved under Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.

The directive was conveyed to the Ministry through the Attorney General and Minister of Justice by the Office of the Chief of Staff.

GYEEDA was originally under the Youth and Sports Ministry to provide the unemployed youth with requisite skills and temporary employments but the programme was saddled with scandals, corruption and misappropriation of funds.

Two officials linked with the operations of GYEEDA, Abuga Pele who was the then National Coordinator and  Philip Asibit head of the Goodwill International, a service provider under GYEEDA are standing trial for alleged cases of fraud and causing financial loss to the state.

While awaiting a comprehensive restructuring of the programme, the president is convinced the programme would be better off under the Employment Ministry than under the Youth and Sports Ministry.

The statement said for the programme to be re-launched effectively and on a sustainable basis, some of the existing modules will need to be reviewed in line with the draft GYEEDA Bill which is presently before Cabinet.

The statement said "some new modules will be introduced to respond to the ever increasing youth unemployment challenge in the country."

"There would also be the introduction of a youth in maritime labour module...For a successful implementation of the youth in maritime labour module, the Ministry intends to seek assistance from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for training facilities so that youth beneficiaries may have first-hand practical experience to satisfy the market demands. The module would therefore be addressing directly some of the perennial labour migration issues the Ministry has identified," the statement indicated.
