There are several stories of how some iconic figures in society endured a difficult childhood prompted by poverty. Pictured here is another example of such a struggle.

The child captured by photojournalist David Andoh was selling kerosine along with her younger sibling.

While the neccesity of the struggle is appreciated, the possibility of this child ending up in failure is real and would be unfortunate. Life is a struggle but as much as possible we must reduce the element of it being a gamble.

This child will be competing with the world. She will compete with Ghanaians in Ghana, the increasing number of Ghanaians who are now schooling outside the country and all other non-Ghanaians everywhere else in the world.

This means that the struggles faced years ago by people like her durng their childhood have multiplied. That is why we must multiply opportunities we can give her.

Selling kerosene is not one of them. True, life has thrown her a lemonade, but if she is unable to make lemons out of it, we will all taste the bitter consequences.
