Ghana will host this year’s Susan G Komen race for the cure of breast cancer tomorrow, Saturday 25^th October 2014 in the Brong Ahafo regional capital, Sunyani.

President of Breast Care International Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai will lead the race that would be attended by thousands of people to draw awareness about cancer.

Survivors of breast cancer are expected to tell their stories to the participants. Over 2,000 women were diagnosed with the disease in 2011 in Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama admonished husbands to show keen interest in the health of their wives, by periodically examining their breasts when he mounted the platform at last year's event in Kumasi.

The President advised husbands that if any lump is detected they should let their wives seek early medical care, since the lump could be a sign of breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is curable, but breast cancer is survivable if it is discovered early. If you discover it early, your chances of surviving are higher. If it is discovered late, survival rates are lower. And so what do you have to do?

“You have to screen your breast at any opportunity, at least once a year. But apart from going to a health facility to screen your breast, you can examine it yourself. Breast examination is very important and husbands have a role to play here. They must examine the breasts of their wives,” noted the President.

Dr. Wiafe Addae who is also the Managing Director of Peace and Love Clinic blamed late reporting of the disease by affected women for the many deaths associated with the disease.

History has it that one Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen in 1982 that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer. Today, the Komen race for the cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives.
