The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in its quest to educate Ghanaians on the need for energy conservation has launched the National Energy Conservation Campaign which aims to alert consumers on the best energy conservation practices.
Speaking at the launch and unveiling of a book entitled “Your Guide to Energy Conservation” at the Labone Senior High School, Sector Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah underscored the need for individuals to conserve energy in their homes, adding that it could save the national grid about 30% of power.
The supply of energy, according to the Minister, is associated with high investment in infrastructure, high operational cost and environmental consequences especially if the source is fossil fuel.
He noted that with less than about 1,200 MW of exploitable hydro capacity left for development, Ghana will have to be content with more expensive thermal power generation to meet the ever growing demand for electricity which is growing at more than 10% per annum.
“Energy efficiency and conservation practices emanate from the human beings who can then support it with the use of technology. The ‘save a watt’ campaign which was launched earlier in the year hinges on students who are considered the “capable captains of home”.
Mr. Buah further urged the students to be good ambassadors of the energy conservation campaign, saying, “we should all leave this auditorium as ambassadors of the “Lets Save Energy, Lets Save Money, Lets Save Our Environment” mantra on our lips and help educate parents, friends, and our communities to improve the country’s energy situation.
“By practicing energy efficiency, consumers pay less for energy services whilst the saved energy made could be made available for other productive uses,” the Minister added.
