The Acting Executive Director of the Ghana National Service Scheme (GNSS) Dr. Michael Kpessa-Whyte has paid a working visit to the Scheme’s project sites at Dawhenya and Nungua both in the Greater Accra Region to acquaint himself with progress of work.
At the Dawhenya farms, he inspected the living accommodation for Service Personnel on the farms as well as newly acquired agricultural machineries which include the Massey Ferguson Combine harvester, a maize dryer, and a planter acquired by the Scheme through a grant from Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF).
He then interacted with service personnel and joined them in bagging and sealing of maize and other produce from the farms.
The Acting Executive Director joined the Service Personnel on the Dawhenya farm in husking and shelling of maize being harvested.
He also inspected work on the vegetable farm where he interacted with personnel working on a sweet pepper and tomato plantation.
Dr. Whyte was impressed with the work being done on the farms by the gallant service persons, who have been posted to the farms as part of their service to the nation.
He apologized to them for the delay in payment of allowances and assured them that they will be paid soon. He said that with their commitment to the projects, very soon the farms will be the number one preferred place of posting for service personnel.
He also said that the current management of the Scheme will take entrepreneurship training seriously so that the youth can both be employed and also employ others in Agriculture.
He also touched on how National Service Personnel and the Ghanaian youth in general can take advantage of the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) fund being rolled out by the government for the youth to start their own businesses.
At the Nungua farms, he was taken around the poultry farm as well as pens of the sheep and goats. Currently, there are over 15,000 birds among some of which are laying eggs and other that are being processed and packaged for the market.
He was pleased with processing of the animal products that the Scheme sells in the market and advised the personnel working on the Nungua farms to take what they are doing seriously and use the best practices in handling the animal products.
He assured them of the Scheme’s commitment to the Youth in Agricultural project and asked them to diligently discharge their duties to the nation.
