The Electricity Company of Ghana says its underground cables have been affected by construction works in some parts of the capital, Accra.

The company had indicated per its timetable that Ghanaians will enjoy at least 24 hours of power supply and endure 12 hours of power cuts.

But it has not adhered to its own timetable. Some angry consumers say the situation is making it difficult for them to plan.

Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Grid Company, Albert Quainoo told Joy News the power producers are all operating and are providing enough power to be distributed in accordance with the load shedding schedule.

“Every plant in the system is producing some megawatts. There is no plant that is off at the moment with the exception of the Bui Plant,” he said, insisting, “I don’t see why anybody should go off for more than 12 hours beyond the load shedding schedule”.

Nana Osafo Kantanka Adjei, the General Manager of TICO plant at Aboadze, told Joy News it has two units with a total installed capacity of 200 megawatts. The first unit, he confirmed, is available and can offer 100 megawatts but it is currently offering about 60 megawatts due to technical reasons.

“There is a challenge with some fuel arrangement and so we are running at that agreed capacity, that is the case,”

The second turbine is currently undergoing plant maintenance work and could return to operation latest by four weeks, he said.

With the available megawatts, questions have been raised about why the ECG is not able to keep to its timetable as some consumers go off longer periods than expected.

But Head of Public Relations at the Electricity Company of Ghana, William Boateng told Joy News faulty cables and the recent rains have accounted for the erratic power supply.

He, however, assured the load shedding will be strictly adhered to by close of day Friday.

“Unfortunately within Central Accra and its environs we have a lot of challenges with underground cables. There is a lot of construction works going on and they are affecting the underground cables.”
