The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Alias Sory, has stressed that the outbreak of the Swine Flu in some parts of the world must not cause panic.He said although the flu is highly infectious, Ghanaians must stay calm as the Health Service activates measures to forestall an outbreak in the country.Doctors describe the H1N1 flu as a respiratory disease thought to be spread through coughing and sneezing.Symptoms of the disease mimic those of normal flu which could make a sufferer confuse it for a cold.H1N1 is the same strain that causes seasonal flu outbreaks in humans but the newly detected version contains genetic material from versions of flu which usually affect pigs and birds, experts say.Dr Sory who arrived from Washington late Sunday said the Health Service would collaborate with the World Health Organisation to adopt some of the measures taken during the outbreak of the SARS virus two years ago.The Health Service Director however mentioned full details of government’s approach to deal with the matter would be announced on Tuesday as he consults with his team after his journey to the US for official duties.The BBC reports governments around the world are hurrying to contain the spread of the new swine virus as more than 100 people are thought to have died of the disease in Mexico.The UN has warned the virus has the potential to become a pandemic, but said the world was better prepared than ever to deal with the threat, the BBC reported.Ghana has yet to take measures to deal with the threat as immigration officials at the Kotoka International Airport still do not have a mechanism to screen travelers from the worst affected regions of the world.Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com, *with additional information from the BBC
