Electricity consumers can expect a new load shedding timetable before the end of January 2015.
In an interview with Joy News on the AM Show, System Control Centre Manager at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) Frank Otchere said "the new timetable will optimize the current generating resources of the country”.
Power supply improved during Christmas but with the yuletide season over, industries and residences are back on a load shedding schedule due to a shortage in the power generation.
The Akosombo Dam, the biggest power generator is also running on four out of six units this year because according to Frank Otchere, “the hydrology was bad this year, the water level is down and so we have to manage the use of the water that is left in the damn so that we are able to stretch it until the next catchment season is on”.
The dry weather condition in the country is also affecting the dam. An inter-utility committee has been meeting to assess the current situation and should come out with a schedule by the end of January.
Frank Otchere is optimistic the Volta River Authority (VRA)'s Kpong thermal plant will bring in additional capacity by the end of the first quarter of this year.
The crisis, Frank Otchere says, will end if all the generation being worked on, including the 250 megawatts emergency generation through the power ministry is brought on stream adding, “if all the generation come into play as we have scheduled them [to] then I am confident we are going to see the end [of the loadshedding]”.
