Government has confirmed some hackers have taken control of its official electronic portal, www.ghana.gov.gh.

This means the government website is currently being controlled by unknown individuals who have now gained unauthorized access to its systems. It also means the country’s partners- local and international- will not have any means of accessing official information about the government.

It raises concerns over the safety of data at a time when cyber terror is on the rise. Recently the US Army's Twitter account was hacked.

The government’s electronic portal is managed by the Information Services Department (ISD) with assistance from the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).

Deputy Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed the development to Myjoyonline.com Wednesday, January 21, 2015.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said they were notified of the situation early Wednesday.

“It is true…our attention was drawn to it earlier this morning,” the Deputy Minister established.

He said investigations have begun, to find the persons behind the virtual war adding that, the ISD and NITA have been tasked to regain access to the portal.

Government, he noted, is worried at the situation.

“It is not a desirable development at all… because on a daily basis, people go to that website for information on developments in the country.

“The challenge for us as government is to make sure we tighten the security protocols to ensure this does not happen again,” he said.
