Prisons Service personnel who were sent to help clean the Kojo market in the Western Region boycotted the Sanitation exercise midway over lack of cooperation by market women.

The exercise received good patronage in some areas in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis although other communities such as Kwesimintim and Esikado did not partake in the exercise. 

Two men from the Prisons Service spoke with Joy News.

“Why would we waste our time here?” one of the angry personnel said.

Regional Minister Paul Evans Aidoo expressed concern about the lack of cooperation by the community members and insisted it was necessary for community members to participate in the exercise.

“The work you have done indicates that you understand the National Sanitation Day. But one thing missing in the exercise is that the Essikado Community did not involve themselves in the exercise. They allowed only the police people to do the work for them.

“So I am hoping next month God willing we will have to ensure that we enter the community itself for them to partake in it he said.

Meanwhile, Many Ghanaians today turned out to clean their communities as the country marked national sanitation day.

The Minister of Local government Julius Debrah led the clean up exercise in the Northern Region where thousands of residents poured out in Tamale to clean the city.
