The General Secretary of the Convention Peoples Party, Prof. Nii Noi Dowuona says he is highly surprised by the exit of Dr. Sekou Nkrumah from the party.
Sekou joined the National Democratic Congress on Wednesday after announcing he felt the NDC was the best platform for him to pursue his political ambitions and to realise the dreams of his late father and Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
He said the CPP, as is currently constituted does not appeal to him as an option for anyone seeking to do serious political work.
“So the problem is that we are left with two options; the NPP and NDC and I think the NDC is closer to the CPP tradition.”
Sekou said one striking similarity between the NDC and the CPP of old is their common support base. He said he brings to the NDC, selfless leadership, freshness and a personality free of materialism.
But Pr. Dowuona said Sekou was one person he least expected to jump the boat given his rich roots in the CPP.
He said the party is going through restructuring, and while its leadership have been sensitive enough to seek to review the party to meet claims that the party does not open up to its youth, it was counting on the likes of Sekou to the party continuity.
Prof. Dowuono agreed with Sekou that the NDC may offer a bigger platform than the CPP can afford in the immediate, it would require the contributions of all its members, especially the enlightened to rejuvenate the party.
He however expressed the hope that the departure of Sekou will inspire feuding factions in the party to live above pettiness and legal wrangling to grow the party.
