A Deputy Finance Minister, Fiifi Kwetey, says government is working feverishly towards restoring the economy after the previous government messed it up. He said the government as a first step wants to ensure discipline and prudence in managing the economy in order to cure the problems brought about by the profligacy of the NPP. Speaking to Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, Fiifi Kwetey said there were no systems in place to reconcile revenue and expenditure when the NDC took office. The absence of such a system, he argued, led the NPP government “to spend recklessly and create a deficit of 15 to 20 per cent.” To avoid that kind of recklessness, the government, the deputy finance minister said, was putting a mechanism in place to constantly monitor revenue inflows and expenditure. He said the first year of the government would be used to stabilize the economy while the rest of the years will focus on growth. To grow the economy and create the jobs promised the people during the electioneering campaigns, the government, Mr Kwetey said is placing emphasis on the agric sector. He stressed that rapid growth in the agric and manufacturing sectors should create adequate jobs and expand the economy to create more opportunities. Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com
