Paramount Chief of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, Nene Sakite II has destooled the paramount queen of the area, Nana Aplam II, after her recent marriage to a man from the Manya division.
Sources close to the Manya Krobo chieftaincy have revealed that before a meeting of chiefs and elders of the area on Monday, the paramount chief announced the immediate destoolment of the queen mother for "betrayal".
The queen’s husband hails from the Manya division, which has been declared autonomous from the Traditional Area without approval.
The division headed by the divisional chief of the area, Okpatakpla Nene Sasraku IV together with five other divisional chiefs in October 2019, declared their independence from Nene Sakite II.
They elevated all six divisional stools to sovereign paramountcies without the blessings of the overlord of the Manya Klo state.
The paramount chief who was unhappy with the queen mother's marriage to a lawyer from the breakaway division reportedly to have summoned her before the chiefs to announce her destoolment.
He described her as unfit to hold herself as the paramount queen mother of the Manya Krobo traditional area after betraying their trust.
Even though many of the chiefs reportedly disproved of the chief’s decision, none could openly challenge his verdict.
A close source to the Nana Aplam II, who confirmed the story said the queen mother is out to seek redress.
“Everything you’ve heard is true, the queen was summoned before the chiefs and her destoolment announced to her” said the source without elaborating further. “.”
Public Relations Officer of the Manya Krobo traditional area, Nene Asada Ahor, however when asked declined to confirm or deny the story.
He said they would respond appropriately in due course.
It is, however, unclear if the queen mother’s marriage is a sacrilege to merit her destoolment or if the process received any customary validity.
If her the current development holds, she’ll go down in history as the first queen mother to be destooled in the traditional area.
Also, the kingmakers of the Manya Krobo Traditional area are under customary obligation to present a new candidate for installation as queen mother.
Privately known as Grace Asare, Nana Aplam II was installed the queen mother of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area in 2015 as part of the annual Ngmayem Festival at Odumase-Krobo.
She succeeded the former queen mother, Nana Mamle Okleyo, who died in 2012.
