MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has expressed worry over the tendency of his children to be exposed to what he describes as the ‘harsh terrain of politics’ in the country.
Admitting that politics could be muddy waters sometimes, the politician fears his children, as young as they are, may be exposed to situations involving him that may bring hurt to them.
“I worry about how they will deal with the harsh terrain of our politics…” he admitted to Edem Knight-Tay on Joy FM’s Home Affairs show.
According to him, “once you’re in the public eye, people are going to say unpleasant things about you. Especially in politics…”
Suhuyini revealed that, he was contemplating ways of conscientising his six-year-old especially, to be prepared for such occurrences and how to handle them.
“She has to prepare for some of the tough times”, he said.
The Member of Parliament was a guest on the station’s flagship show as it discussed the phenomenon of fatherhood through the eyes of public figures.
The father of two revealed that as a personal decision, he makes a conscious effort to remove his kids from the limelight as much as possible. For one he fears they may have to face “the harsh judgment of society”.
He expressed worry over people being too critical of them and their actions simply because of the status of their father.
“People won’t understand that these are kids who need their space to grow”, he said.
According to him, this could compel the children to act in ways their ages may not be ready for, because of the pressure of society.
He also told Edem Knight-Tay he wishes to give them the opportunity to decide for themselves if the limelight is a space they would want to be in.
“I don’t want to impose it on them, and they are too young to make that decision”, he stated.
